The storyline of "There"

"There" was written as a concept album with a continuing storyline. The songs refer to this story more or less obviously; nevertheless, it is a good thing to have an overall impression what the whole album is about:

After his suicide, a young man is on his way through the mist of death. He leaves the disorder and the promises of the universe and finally arrives in an unexpected place: a parallel world beyond time and space, beyond heaven and hell. A delegation of fellow creatures welcomes him. After singing their scorn to him they lead him into his new home. There, he must face a trial, where he is found guilty of throwing away the gift of life. His sentence, therefore, is to be excluded from the circle of life and death, meaning, he must stay in this parallel world without any hope.
He wanders desperately through the lands searching for a way out. On his journey he meets strange creatures and other beings who are about to enter the sanctum, the realm of death. In the end he arrives at the two towers, on edark and one light. This is the place where all gather to celebrate their religions. Finally our young man realizes that a long stay in this world leads to a metamorphosis. With disgust, he watches those who have reached their final state of existence: dehumanised creatures, either stupid, terrifyingly cold, or burning in hate.
To escape this fate, he has to bear the distress of life once again, and must work on the perfection of his soul in order to rejoin the circle of creation. He is forced to view life in the 21st century and the prospect of that life terrifies him. After a long contemplation, his decision is made. In the end he knows: only the experience of a new life will help him grow and achieve redemption.
After a dramatic escape through a tunnel he reaches the universe and approaches his aim: rebirth.
